Painting is dirty work. We are remin­ded of this first by the paper towels—the latest pain­ting series by Rafał Buj­now­ski. Clas­sic motifs emerge from the black splot­ches of paint left by the brush when wiped routinely on paper towels.

3D synthetic folklore

On 22 February we invite you to the opening of the Janek Simon retrospec­tive at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Con­tem­porary Art in Warsaw. The exhibition will feature the most interesting works, objects and instal­lations by the artist drawn from the first 15 years of his career, along with new projects on psychedelia and artificial intel­ligence, as well as documen­tation of Simon’s curatorial and social initiatives.

Rafał Buj­now­ski was named the laureate of the Jan Cybis award for 2018, given by the Warsaw chap­ter of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP). Buj­now­ski is the first winner of the award born in the 1970s.

Roman Biennale

Zbigniew Libera realized a moving, monumen­tal instal­lation at the Arte in Memoria bien­nale, held for over a decade in the ruins of Ostia Antica in Rome. The installation—a sec­tion of rail­road tracks dozens of yards long (pic­tured above)—bears the title Where Do They Go? and is located near the remains of the oldest synagogue in Europe.

An exhibition by Slavs and Tatars opened at Dresden’s Alber­tinum museum under the melodious title Made in Dscher­many. The main theme is German Orientalism—the ties between German cul­ture and Islam—and the key is in the first four let­ters of the title: DSCH.

The “Wripped Scripped” book by Slavs and Tatars, offers a jour­ney into the sound world of nasals and voiceless gut­turals, sup­plemen­ted this time by an analysis of the con­sonant dʒ (the German tetragraph dsch).

Houses painted and photographed

A unique encoun­ter between Zofia Rydet and Władysław Hasior is presen­ted at Galeria BWA in Tarnów. Under the theme Pain­ted Houses, photographs by the two artists are exhibited as an original record of the visual and material cul­ture of the Polish coun­tryside in the twilight of the 20th century.

Tokyo Art Book Fair

Raster par­ticipates in the 2017 edition of Tokyo Art Book Fair. It’s the big­gest art book fair in Asia, with a high-​culture schedule of exhibitions, screenings and panels. Crazy gallery roadtrip

Libera wrestling at the theatre

“The battle of good vs. evil” is the title of a per­for­mative action by Zbigniew Libera that was part of a 24-hour-long art project “Long cycle” in the national theatre Stary Teatr in Kraków. Two pairs of wrestlers fought non stop over night on June 5 in the theatre foyer.

Janek Simon’s show “Brussels Research Yoga” was exhibited in the artistic neigh­bor­hood of Saint-​Gilles, in the space run by an experimen­tal art residency program Super Deals, who invited Simon for a one-month-long stay in Brussels.
