Curtain

Curtain

Michał Budny creates travesties and imitations in the form of paintings and sculptures that address the question of obsolescence in the conventional gallery or museum space. “Curtain” is one of them – with a wooden frame as its core, with other fabrics layered on it. Budny’s curtain is thus covering and at the same time revealing itself as an object of contemplation.

House with Garden

House with Garden

In a style typical for the artist, “House with Garden” is composed of simple, inexpensive materials, some recycled. The ordinariness of these materials contrasts with the studied composition – Budny references a form of a poem as inspiration for his own artistic method.

Atlas

Atlas

In its form, “Atlas” is a work reminiscent of a painting, which is essentially a frame wound with paper and fabric, its interior empty.

Abyss

Abyss

The artist himself refers to the work as a ”mental abyss” or an “extremely bad situation”.

Idiot’s Mask

Idiot’s Mask

A mask which, once put on, makes its owner thoughtless, insensitive and stupid, which puts all grave matters aside and allows for an escape from one’s beliefs, expectations or ideas.

Crumbs

Crumbs

Crumbs are a sculptural microcosmos, a miniature sculpture garden, and at the same time a page from an obsessive diary that notes only the tiny details of our life and surroundings.

Lying loosely on the gallery floor, the paper shapes forming an outline of Poland open up letting some fresh air in.

Homeless Shakedown

Homeless Shakedown

The works from the Homeless Shakedown series bear an exceptional selfreflexive tone.

Rain

Rain

A monolithic slanting figure, covered with corrugated cardboard with shapes of rooftops cut from below – an unusual interpretation of a most usual weather phenomenon, in a meticulous, bookbinder-like, manner.

Air

Air

A three-dimensional puzzle telling the story of a long-distance acquaintance. The blue and red elements are models of homes, while the gray is the air that surrounds them. In reality the two buildings are separated by the distance of thousands of miles, one being a block of flats in Warsaw, the other a tenement house in New York. They are separated by volumes of air, […]

The piece was prepared for the exhibition “Manipulations: on economies of deceit” (curated by Adam Budak) and is a spatial visualization of an abstract bar chart such as those often encountered in the financial columns of contemporary newspapers.

Projection
