Grzeszykowska makes a radical turn in the direction of the grotesque, creating startling sculptural charades using fragments of her own body, modeled in pigskin and exhibited on smooth leather backgrounds. Her selfie takes on an uncanny quality as she creates a self-portrait out of many parts.
“I was interested in making this piece a very faint minimalist rendition of that pattern of color. It was important to me to make the colors so similar in tone that if one were color blind or if one were seeing it in black-and-white it might seem to be all one color. I love the feeling of these very subtle color shifts.”
The intimate scale of the objects, modeled on the structure of room dividers underlines the idiosyncratic and impractical nature of these items. The paintings they’re composed of are made of silk, hand-embroidered, painted and printed.
A reference to Bujnowskis’s series Curtain from a decade ago: the curtain as a thin layer of paint applied with a number of simple brush strokes serves as a brilliant mental shortcut and a simple but sophisticated painterly exercise.
Jacquard woven paintings offer a visual interpretation of the sound of machinery and industrial equipment.
