A series of paintings by Bartek Materka – an effect of his 2013 art residency in Upper Silesia – is currently on display in the new building of the Silesian Museum in Katowice (its official opening is scheduled for autumn 2015). The ‘Project Metropolis’ exhibition is the final result of over a few dozens of art residencies held in Silesia and Dąbrowa Basin (Zagłębie Dąbrowskie) – a few-year-long project led by Stanisław Ruksza. The extraordinary, dramatic scenography of the exhibition was designed by Łukasz Błażejewski and creates an interesting background for Materka’s works (among others). His vibrant figurative paintings analyze conventions of portraits and genre scenes – routine activities happening in everyday interiors while at the same time disclosing a deeper melancholia and psychological tension.
