Two artists and two fields of art: painting and film. Both rebellious. Both resisting the times they lived in and contesting the system that surrounded them.
Latest exhibition, Edward Dwurnik: Portrait from Life, brings back the memory of the artist’s collaboration with Andrzej Szczygł—screenwriter and director of documentary films, who passed away in 2024. The opening will take place on Saturday, April 12, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
The exhibition features works by Edward Dwurnik from the 1970s and 1980s, portraying Polish people during the PRL (Polish People’s Republic) era. Spanning two decades, the paintings from the series Moment, Athletes, Hitchhiking Travels, and Workers are marked by diverse styles and perspectives—ranging from wide panoramas to close-ups capturing minute details. This body of work centers on the human face and the struggles of everyday life. Many of these works also appear in Andrzej Szczygł’s documentary films, which we will present during special screenings.
An integral part of the exhibition Edward Dwurnik: Portrait from Life will be thirty previously unseen photographs by Teresa Gierzyńska, a long-time observer of the collaboration between Dwurnik and Szczygł. She took part in the making of the films Fruits of the Earth and Polish Nike. Her photographs from the film sets—though documentary in nature—bear the distinct quality of artistic photography.
The exhibition Edward Dwurnik: Portrait from Life is curated by Pola Dwurnik and Daniel Ożga.
It will be on view until May 17.
