Portrait of Władysław Broniewski (1897-1962), a prominent Communist poet with a complicated, predominantly tragic, biography. It is based on a photograph by Jan Styczyński (published in 1973 in “Wisła” photobook) of the poet in his beloved Masovian landscape. Broniewski was then at the peak of his popularity, and a pupil of the authorities. It was getting clear, by looking at his face, that he had a growing weakness for liquor. This painting was shown in the Steadelijk Museum in Amsterdam and in our gallery during the “Broniewski” project.
