Curtain

Michał Budny creates travesties and imitations in the form of pain­tings and sculp­tures that address the question of obsolescence in the conven­tional gal­lery or museum space. “Curtain” is one of them – with a wooden frame as its core, with other fabrics layered on it. Budny’s cur­tain is thus covering and at the same time revealing itself as an object of contemplation.

House with Garden

In a style typical for the artist, “House with Garden” is com­posed of simple, inexpen­sive materials, some recyc­led. The ordinariness of these materials con­trasts with the studied com­position – Budny referen­ces a form of a poem as inspiration for his own artistic method.

Atlas

In its form, “Atlas” is a work reminiscent of a pain­ting, which is essen­tially a frame wound with paper and fabric, its interior empty.

The artist him­self refers to the work as a ”mental abyss” or an “extremely bad situation”.

Idiot’s Mask

A mask which, once put on, makes its owner though­tless, insen­sitive and stupid, which puts all grave mat­ters aside and allows for an escape from one’s beliefs, expec­tations or ideas.

Crumbs

Crumbs are a sculp­tural microcosmos, a miniature sculp­ture garden, and at the same time a page from an obses­sive diary that notes only the tiny details of our life and surroundings.

Lying loosely on the gal­lery floor, the paper shapes for­ming an outline of Poland open up let­ting some fresh air in.

The works from the Homeless Shakedown series bear an excep­tional sel­freflexive tone.

A monolithic slan­ting figure, covered with cor­rugated card­board with shapes of rooftops cut from below – an unusual inter­pretation of a most usual weather phenomenon, in a meticulous, bookbinder-​like, manner.

A three-​dimensional puzzle telling the story of a long-​distance acquaintance. The blue and red elements are models of homes, while the gray is the air that sur­rounds them. The piece was prepared for the exhibition “Manipulations: on economies of deceit” (curated by Adam Budak) and is a spatial visualization of an abs­tract bar chart such as those often encoun­tered in the finan­cial columns of con­tem­porary newspapers.
