For Iza Opiełka, pain­ting is a way of brin­ging order to a chaotic reality. Her visually cap­tivating abs­tract works are the result of a carefully con­sidered process. They func­tion as a kind of analogue algorithm, trans­for­ming a spon­taneous, drawn sketch into refined, mul­tilayered com­positions with diverse textures and tonal variations. This process is recor­ded on the sur­face of the pain­tings, allowing the suc­ces­sive stages of its creation to be read from within the works themselves.

The common thread of Opiełka’s newest pain­tings lies not only in their tech­nique, but above all in the unset­tling sen­sation of the frag­men­ted world and the over­whel­ming amount of infor­mation that sur­rounds us. A psychophysical need for order is reflec­ted in pain­tings limited to a grayscale palette, created using only two paints — titanium white and bone black. The essence of the process is the con­struc­tion of struc­tures, which emerge through the repetition of an original, hand-​drawn motif. The repeated, rhyth­mic mul­tiplication of an acciden­tal mes­sage introduces order. This ambivalence creates a unique tension.

Presen­ted together, Opiełka’s pain­tings form a pul­sating archive of abs­tract impul­ses. Their mechanical appearance interacts with the sur­prisin­gly sen­sual movement of individual motifs. The rhythm of life becomes more impor­tant than the shape of things.
